Critical Evaluation
In terms of strength, 360 videos offer a highly immersive experience, making viewers feel as if they are part of the story. This can lead to a deeper emotional connection to the content. And viewers have the freedom to look around and explore the virtual environment, which can make the viewing experience more engaging and interactive. 360 VR videos can provide unique perspectives that are not possible with traditional video formats. Despite the absence of voice-over narration, I imagine viewers being able to explore their surroundings and actively participate in the plot. So, adding subtitles would be a strength for viewers to understand the storyline of this short film.
In terms of the weakness, the combination of glitchy transitions and sudden black-and-white shifts between images may cause disorientation or motion sickness in some viewers during their immersive experience. The introduction scene appears rather weak due to the “guide” being positioned too far from the camera. During the editing process, I noticed significant blurriness, which further detracts from the overall impact.
Strength & Weakness
What could be done to improve the work?
Pay attention to stitch lines (seams where multiple camera lenses’ footage is stitched together). Use editing techniques to minimize or eliminate visible stitch lines for a seamless viewing experience. Also, it would have been beneficial to have a well-structured storyboard during filming, as it serves as a valuable tool for enhancing team collaboration. Each team member brings a distinct perspective on how the story should unfold, and a storyboard acts as a visual guide, helping everyone align their vision.
Address the weak introduction scene by adjusting the positioning of the “guide.” Bring the guide closer to the camera to create a more impactful opening. Ensure clarity and focus during editing to avoid blurriness. And enhance the storyline conceptually by focusing on engaging storytelling. Consider elements like character development, plot twists, and emotional arcs. Use the 360 format to immerse viewers in the narrative.
